Delays Mark Brazil Day at Rock in Rio, Which Ends Nearly 4 A.M.

The festival brought together big names in trap, rap, funk, MPB, pop and rock in a night full of hits and technical problems.

The penultimate day of Rock in Rio, celebrated as Brazil Day, was marked by significant delays that affected the entire program of Palco Mundo and extended the event until almost 4 am this Sunday (22). The Para Sempre Trap show, scheduled for 3:30 pm, took place almost at 5 pm, about an hour and a half late. The delay provoked whistles and chants of “shame” from the young audience, eager to see the performances of the big names in trap, and generated a chain reaction that moved the program much later than expected.

When Cabelinho, Filipe Ret, Kayblack, Matuê, Orochi and Veigh took the stage, the enthusiasm was dampened by the delay. In addition, technical problems characterized the presentation, which was interrupted. The same sound failures accompanied all the other shows of Palco Mundo, leaving the audience dissatisfied several times.

Rap and Samba on the Sunset Stage

The Sunset Stage opened with the Para Sempre Rap show, which brought together some of the biggest names in national rap. Marcelo D2, Criolo, Djonga, Karol Conká and Rael shared the stage for a powerful celebration of the genre. In one of the most intense moments of the performance, Djonga commanded the audience to the sound of “Olho de Tigre”, with the verse “fire on the racists”, which set the audience alight. Karol Conká, the only woman in the group, took the opportunity to pay homage to the pioneers of female rap, such as Negra Li, Dina Di, Tássia Reis and Flora Matos. The presentation was marked by speeches on racism and resistance, with Criolo and Marcelo D2 reinforcing the importance of rap as a tool for social transformation.

On the contrary, the samba circle that brought together Zeca Pagodinho, Alcione, Diogo Nogueira, Jorge Aragão, Maria Rita and Xande de Pilares was the one that least affected the public. Despite this, there was an emotional moment, when images of great names of samba, such as Beth Carvalho, Dona Ivone Lara and Martinho da Vila, appeared on the screens, paying homage to the icons of the genre.

Forever Funk celebrates the pioneers of the genre

At Espaço Favela, the audience followed the history of Rio funk with pioneers such as Buchecha, Cidinho & Doca, MC Carol and Tati Quebra Barraco. The presentation Para Semper: Baile de Favela started with only 30 minutes of delay, one of the shortest waits of the day, and was characterized by hits from the 2000s, which transformed the space into a real funk party, with hits such as “Nosso Sonho”, “Só Quero É Ser Feliz” and “Rap das Armas”. The closing ceremony was hosted by Kevin O Chris, who entertained the audience with the most recent hits, such as “Dentro do Carro” and “Evoluiu”.

Then came another dance, this time featuring funk musicians from São Paulo, including MC Livinho, MC Don Juan, MC Dricka, MC Hariel, MC IG and MC PH, who curiously entertained the Rio crowd more than the locals, thanks to a repertoire full of the latest popular hits, ensuring that the audience kept dancing and singing throughout the show.

Forever MPB becomes a rock show

The Para Sempre MPB show was the second to take place on Palco Mundo. The presentation was opened by Ney Matogrosso, 83, with… a rock ballad. The song “Poema”, a song by Cazuza and Frejat, was revered by the audience who, in addition to the delays, had to deal with a light rain. His performance began with a slower pace, but gained strength with another rock song, “Balada do Louco”, by Rita Lee and Arnaldo Baptista, releasing the emotions of the audience.

Ney concluded his rock show on the MPB stage with “Pro Dia Nascer Feliz”. Zeca Baleiro reprised the sequence in the same vein, with “Heavy Metal do Senhor” and paying homage to Charlie Brown Jr. with his reinterpretation of “Proibida pra Mim (Grazon)”. Gaby Amarantos, in bright costumes, brought her raunchy style to the stage with “Ex Mai Love”, celebrating being the first person from Pará to sing on Palco Mundo. Majur and Gaby performed a vibrant duet in “Xirley”, and Majur brought the audience to apotheosis with… rap. He sang “AmarElo”, a hit by Emicida. The unprecedented meeting between Majur and the dub rock band BaianaSystem in the powerful “Capim Guiné” gave the show an intense energy, highlighting the Afropunk of… MPB? Carlinhos Brown and Daniela Mercury closed the show in a Bahian party atmosphere, but there were also rock references, such as “Uma Brasileira”, which would sound like Carlinhos with Paralamas do Sucesso. The finale with the queen of axé was a real carnival, complete with the anthem “O Canto da Cidade” in samba format.

Forever Pop Brings Surprising Duets

The Para Sempre Pop show made up for delays and technical failures with high-impact partnerships. Lulu Santos opened with “Tempos Modernos,” but her performance was hampered by the more powerful sound of Palco Mundo, where Daniela Mercury was still performing at Para Semper MPB. Even so, Lulu shone in a duet with Luísa Sonza in “Como Uma Onda.”

More integrated than the others, the presentation followed a duet structure. Jão and Luísa Sonza sang “Malandragem”, a hit by Cássia Eller, while Jão and Duda Beat moved the audience with “Como Eu Quero”, by Kid Abelha. Ivete Sangalo and Gloria Groove closed the performance with a powerful version of “Não Quero Dinheiro”, by Tim Maia.

Luan Santana and Country Karaoke Canceled

One of the main effects of the delays was the cancellation of Luan Santana, who was supposed to perform in the show Para Semper Sertanejo along with Chitãozinho and Xororó, Ana Castela, Simone Mendes and Junior. Luan had to cancel his participation due to a commitment for a show in Santa Catarina that same night. The singer had only confirmed his presence with the promise that there would be no delays, but since the show was rescheduled for 10:40 p.m., he was forced to leave.

Even without Luan, Chitãozinho and Xororó, Ana Castela and the other artists kept the energy going, leading the audience in a true celebration of country music. The highlight was the classic “Evidências”, which transformed the festival into a huge karaoke party, with the audience singing at the top of their lungs.

Forever Rock in Rio

The rhythm that characterizes Rock in Rio was the one that suffered the most from the accumulation of problems, ending its performance at almost 4 in the morning. But it was also the one that moved the audience the most, proving that rock actually has more to do with the festival. The entrance of Dinho Ouro Preto, of Capital Inicial, managed to revive the energy of an audience that had already faced rain and a long delay. “Natasha” and “A Sua Maneira” elicited emotional chants, with LED bracelets lighting up the audience while images of crying fans were shown on the screen. Interestingly, the veteran artists opted for slow songs. Garrido’s romantic reggae, with songs like “A Estrada”, briefly transformed the atmosphere, to the delight of the couples in attendance.

Pitty was the one who regained the power of rock, albeit with the ballad “Equalize”, but Rogério Flausino, from Jota Quest, left the romantic show again. It was the turn of the youngest, Detonautas and Nx Zero, to represent the most energetic rock. Tico Santa Cruz and Di Ferrero got the audience on their feet with “Outro Lugar” and “Só Rezo”, creating an atmosphere of celebration and excitement, complete with pogo wheels and beer thrown in the air.

Finally, the artists reunited for a version of “Por Agora”, by Cássia Eller. Despite technical failures during the show, the setlist of national rock classics sustained the energy of the audience until the end. Even after 3:40 in the morning, cries of “I’m not leaving” echoed throughout Rock in Rio, leaving in the air the emotion that only rock can give.
