Tonight with the Family: 20 years ago, with this movie, Pixar Studios took on an incredible new challenge

After the government bans superheroes from their trade due to the alleged harm they cause, Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl are now just Bob and Helen Paar, completely ordinary parents of three children who are also forced to hide their powers.

While Helen seems to have adapted to this new life, Bobby can’t stand the daily routine anymore and dreams of wearing the mask and costume again. One day, a mysterious young woman nicknamed Mirage gives him the opportunity to offer a secret mission: to destroy a super robot on a tropical island.

A new challenge for Pixar studios

With each new feature film, the artists at the Pixar studio pay close attention to finding a new major challenge. Having overcome Sulli’s bulging fur in Monsters & Co. and finding Nemo reflected in the water, they are now ready to take another step up the animation ladder and amaze the world once again.

Directed by Brad Bird (of New Pixar, who previously directed The Iron Giant for Warner Bros.), The Incredibles will be the company’s sixth feature film. And in addition to offering Pixar an exciting dive into the world of superheroes, the film’s script will give it a new opportunity to shine because it’s based exclusively on… human heroes.

The first CGI film with human characters

Indeed, it may seem incredible, but until 2004, all computer-animated films released in theaters were careful to avoid such a scenario, because digital tools were not yet considered efficient enough to attempt such an adventure.

With the exception of the first two Shrek episodes (which contained several human characters, but still had ogres and a donkey as the main characters), the challenge had not yet been accepted. And the Incredibles will therefore successfully penetrate the breach.

Crowned with the Oscar for Best Animated Feature (the second for Pixar Studios), the film is a true visual success, as is the script, which multiplies references to superhero movies, of course, but also to the adventures of James Bond and some True. Lies by James Cameron.

What will you like…

  • The humor is everywhere and very cleverly distilled throughout the film, every power of the protagonists is clearly an excuse for many gags.
  • The adventurous spirit and family values that emerge from the feature film. The Incredibles are of course determined to save the world, but they want to save it as a family!
  • A wonderful and catchy soundtrack by Michael Giacchino, who would become one of Pixar’s privileged composers.

What could be bothering them…

  • Not much, really, except maybe the evil Frozone, certainly menacing, but not really scary.
