Oscars 2025: Brazil chooses “I’m Still Here” as its representative

The Brazilian Film Academy announced this Monday (23) that the film I’m still heredirected by Walter Salles, has been chosen to represent Brazil in the race for a spot as Best International Film at the 2025 Oscars. The decision was unanimous among the members of the selection committee.

In addition to being selected for the 2025 Oscar, the film has finally received its release date in Brazilian theaters.

I’m still here receives international recognition

Walter Salles’ film had already won the award for best screenplay at the Venice Film Festival, as well as being screened at other important festivals, such as Toronto, San Sebastián and New York, consolidating its international relevance.

The plot of I’m still here is based on the autobiography of Marcelo Rubens Paiva and revolves around his mother, Eunice Paiva, widow of former deputy Rubens Paiva, who was killed during the military dictatorship. The work highlights Eunice’s tireless search for the truth about her husband’s disappearance and her fight to open the dictatorship’s archives and for the memory of missing politicians.

Cast and Oscar Expectations

The film stars Fernanda Torres, Fernanda Montenegro and Selton Mello. Fernanda Torres’ performance as Eunice Paiva has been widely praised by critics.

Bárbara Paz, president of the Selection Committee of the Brazilian Film Academy, expressed her pride in the film’s selection. “I’m Still Here is a masterpiece about memory and a family under military dictatorship. This is a historic moment for our cinema,” she said. During the awards, she highlighted Brazil’s chances of returning to be among the best in the world.

Where to watch I’m still here

I’m still here has not yet been released, it has only appeared in international film festivals. But, after the announcement that the film will represent Brazil at the 2025 Oscars, Sony Pictures has finally provided a date for its arrival in Brazilian theaters: November 7.

Eventually, the film should hit streaming and its home should be Globoplay.
