Resident Says She’s Treated ‘Like a Dog’ on SP Buses, Nunes Asks for Right to Reply

The current mayor has fended off criticism after a constituent vented over bus fare prices in Sao Paulo

A resident’s outburst about public transportation in São Paulo has sparked a clash between candidate Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) and Ricardo Nunes (MDB), the current mayor and candidate for re-election, in the eighth debate of the first round of the 2024 elections.

In an event organized by Flow News, the Flow Group’s news program, candidates for mayor of the capital discussed proposals based on questions raised by the people of São Paulo. This is the case of Gisele da Silva, a resident of Jardim Robru, in Guaianases, in the East Zone.

Gisele asked about the situation of buses in the city and the cost of the ticket. “Not even dogs are treated like us,” she said, reiterating that the candidates only remember the population ‘to ask for a vote’. The resident’s question was selected for Boulos’s answer and Tabata Amaral’s (PSB) comment.

“You don’t lack character, do you? You come standing, without sitting, without anything, except the absurdity of the ticket that we have to pay. Every two years you increase the ticket,” Gisele said in a recorded question.

The PSOLista promised, if elected, to “cancel” bus contracts in the capital and said that Gisele’s speech is something “stuck in the throats of many people.” Boulos also corrected himself and took a jab at the current mayor: “Where does the money for the transport system in São Paulo go?”

In the next block, Nunes was responding on culture when she took the time to ask for the right of reply to talk about the bus issue. The request was denied by the debate organizer.
