The drop in box office revenue is occurring in an attempt to attract spectators with cheaper tickets, with a negative impact on the performance of the country’s theatres.
Last weekend, Brazilian cinemas recorded their second-worst attendance figures of 2024, even with the extension of the ticket promotion. Between Thursday and Sunday, 728,000 people went to the cinemas, generating revenue of R$ 16.1 million, according to Comscore data.
Cheaper tickets
The previous week, cinema chains across the country had launched a campaign with tickets priced at R$12, in an attempt to increase audience attendance. However, the lack of interest in the productions on display caused some networks to decide to extend the promotion. Even with this strategy, the lack of major releases resulted in a lower audience than expected.
Performance comparable to the worst weekend of the year
The only weekend in 2024 with a lower box office was April 25-28, when 699,000 people visited theaters and revenue amounted to R$ 15.61 million. The lack of blockbusters continues to be a determining factor in box office performance in Brazil.
K-Pop leads the box office
Amid the general decline in attendance, the premiere of the documentary “Jung Kook: I am Still” topped the list, grossing R$3.28 million and selling 79,000 tickets to K-Pop fans. The film follows the BTS member’s solo tour. As a result, “Ghosts Still Have Fun: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which had led the box office for the past two weeks, fell to No. 2 with a gross of R$3.11 million and 158,000 admissions.
The 3rd place went to the premiere of “Transformers: The Beginning”, which earned R$ 1.01 million and attracted 53 thousand people. Despite this performance, the film will officially “debut” in theaters only next Thursday (26/9).
