It was one of the most anticipated series of the fall and it has finally landed on the MAX platform. Fans of Batman and the DC Comics universe are treated to a Batman spin-off directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz.
Two years after the feature film, the universe expands with a spin-off series centered around the character of Oswald Cobb, aka The Penguin, played by Colin Farrell. The 8-episode fiction, simply titled Penguin, follows the character’s rise through Gotham’s criminal underworld and sits somewhere between The Sopranos and Marvel’s Daredevil.
- Penguin: How much is a Batman spin-off series with Colin Farrell worth?
And we can say that the first episode, published on the Internet on September 20, has already won the public, if we believe the numerous comments on AlloCiné.
“It smells like a nugget”
So far, members of the AlloCiné community have given The Penguin series an average rating of 4 out of 5 based on the first episode. Thus, for Vader Mir (3.5/5): “Colin Farrell is great, the makeup of his character is incredible. The atmosphere is neat.”
On the other hand, Sally Mallim (5/5) did not “Never judge by the first episode” Usually, but in the case of the penguin, “I have to admit, it smells like a gem! Visually gorgeous, we’re going to be blown away by this Gotham! HBO quality guaranteed? Of course!”
Finally, Naughty Dog (4/5) believes that“We have a really successful spin-off series supported by a great cast, all without the fanservice (standalone story)!”.
Netizens on social media were also not enthusiastic about this first episode of Penguin.
With “Penguin” we are clearly heading towards one of the best series of the year.

Penguin, episode 1 📺 ✅
In keeping with Batman, the series offers a very good pilot with a dark atmosphere and careful AD.
The stakes are set perfectly and Colin Farrell is once again impeccably believable in the role.
I strongly confirm 🔥😉 pic.twitter.com/4oLmfT6AU5

What a pleasure to return to the world of Batman in anticipation of his second installment! A very good start for the Penguins with Colin Farrell and Christine Milioti very involved. It promises big bloody and dirty intrigue on Gotham’s underside pic.twitter.com/iIinibssca

I started Penguin and it is very, very heavy
The Gotham of Matt Reeves’ world is still as beautiful and sinister as ever. Colin Farrell as Penguin kills it like in the movie

“A very pleasant surprise”
As for the press, critics are also enthusiastic about Penguin as wide screen (4/5), who sees this spin-off as the perfect sequel to the Matt Reeves film:
“Darker and more radical than meets the eye, ‘Penguin’ is the perfect sequel to ‘Batman.’ The city was a very pleasant surprise.
first (3.5/5) highlights the performances of its lead actors Colin Farrell and Christine Milioti:
Without rising to the level of Matt Reeves’ Batman, this spin-off dedicated to the Dark Knight’s nemesis stands out for its envious plot and two solid performances: Colin Farrell in the carnivorous title role and the amazing Christine Milioti. “
The press still warns the audience that Penguin is a talking thriller, a series of gangsters that is not necessarily based on action sequences, even if the whole thing is very convincing, especially Parisian (3/5):
“There are no action scenes from this very talky series, long dialogue scenes between gangsters and sociopaths are reserved for thriller fans…”
It remains to be seen if Internet users will be as enthusiastic about the entire series. We’ll have to wait until the end of Penguin’s weekly broadcast to find out if the complete fic has convinced fans, with the eighth and final episode streaming online on November 11 on MAX.
