The novelty must explore the human and divine aspects of Jesus Christsomething similar to what the filmmaker did in The Last Temptation of Christfrom 1988. Scorsese hopes to film in Israel, Italy and Egypt, but locations have not yet been confirmed.

The idea for The Life of Jesus would have appeared after a meeting between the filmmaker and the Pope Francis in early 2023.
