A group of over 125 Hollywood-related artists published an open letter this week to seek passage of a bill regulating the development of artificial intelligence in California, United States.
Signatures include Jane Fonda, JJ Abrams, Shonda Rhimes, Bryan Cranston, Alec Baldwin, Pedro Pascal, Jessica Chastain, Adam McKay, Alfred Molina and Whoopi Goldberg. “We fully believe in the extraordinary potential of artificial intelligence to be used for good. But we also need to be realistic about the risks,” reads an excerpt from the statement.
THE SB 1047 bill it is one of the strongest American laws yet regarding artificial intelligence. And having approval in the state of California is even more significant given the concentration of the five largest tech companies in Silicon Valley.
The document has already been approved by state lawmakers and must be approved by governor Gavin Newsom by September 30 to come into force. In the recent interview with the LA TimesThe Democrat said he has some considerations about the financial impact of the project, which he said could reduce the state’s competitiveness.
One of the premises of SB 1047 is the creation of tools to prevent harm in the future. The proposal creates a set of models that should be applied by bigtechs in creating and improving devices that use artificial intelligence.
The text was criticized by much of the artificial intelligence industry, by the speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, by the mayor of San Francisco, London Breed, and by congressional Democrats in California, according to the The Verge website.

Dear Governor Newsom,
As you well know, some of the most powerful and profitable companies in the world are currently competing to exploit the enormous business opportunity known as AI. Many of these companies are based in their home state of California.
Last week you signed two bills into law that will help protect the rights and livelihoods of artists from various unethical uses of artificial intelligence by these big tech companies. We are sincerely grateful.
But now there’s another bill urgently awaiting your signature that would regulate artificial intelligence: Senator Wiener’s SB 1047. This bill is not about protecting artists, it’s about protecting everyone.
Severe threats from artificial intelligence used to be the stuff of science fiction, but not anymore. While billionaire opponents of SB 1047 dismiss these concerns as fantastical, many of the industry’s leading engineers, academics and politicians warn otherwise. In a recent open letter in support of SB 1047, more than a hundred current and former employees of OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, Meta, and xAI said:
“We believe that more powerful AI models could soon pose serious risks, such as expanded access to biological weapons and cyberattacks on critical infrastructure. It is feasible and appropriate for companies at the forefront of AI to test whether the most powerful AI models can cause serious harm, and for these companies to implement reasonable safeguards against such risks.”
SB 1047 would implement the safeguards requested by these industry insiders. The bill passed with an overwhelming majority in the California State Senate and Assembly. Polls show 77% of Californians support the bill. Why shouldn’t the governor sanction him?
Governor Newsom, most of us reside in California. We are your supporters. We voted for you. We want to continue to believe that you are a leader who will champion the well-being of all, not just a few Silicon Valley giants.
We fully believe in the extraordinary potential of artificial intelligence to be used for good. But we also need to be realistic about the risks. Now is the time, Governor, for California to set a positive, practical example for the entire United States, as well as the rest of the world.
