Alexander Aja has 10 films in his 25-year career. Since his debut on Furia alongside Marion Cotillard and Stanislas Merhart in Mother Earth directed by Halle Berry, the French filmmaker has established himself as one of the masters of horror cinema.
After leaving for work in the United States in 2003 after high tensions, the filmmaker returns to our microphone to talk about his journey, his regrets and his love of genre films.
Asked about his evolution between his first film Furia and his tenth feature Mother Earth, the director tells us:It’s a real difference for a director who was just 20 years old on Fury, and today I probably have to admit that at the time I was a little afraid of the actors. I didn’t feel comfortable with the actors and I apologize for that. On Fury, I had the chance to work with Marion Cotillard, Stanislas Merhar, and a lot of very talented people, and I probably didn’t work with them enough because I was a little afraid of the direction of the actors. It was something that impressed me, whereas the technique was something that was really very instinctive.
Today, when I make a film like Mother Earth, for me the actors are at the center of the process. This is probably one of the most interesting parts and what makes me most excited when I start a movie. It’s a stage shoot with Halle Berry, Percy and Anthony, who are two outstanding actors, these three great actors come together and create something together. “

But one day, the rope breaks and they have no choice but to engage in a terrible fight for their own survival…
Mother Earth is a must see in cinema.
