Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said on Monday that, “more or less in a week”, between 500 and 600 betting sites will go offline in Brazil, as part of measures that the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will take to regulate this sector. called Betting in the country.

In an interview with CBN radio, Haddad further said that in addition to banning some betting sites, the government will also limit the payment methods allowed for on-air sites, carry out individual monitoring of bets and prizes, and control the advertising of these websites.

“First step: ban unregulated betting in the Brazilian space. There are around 500, 600 betting sites that will go offline in the next few days, because Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency) will block access to these sites in the Brazilian space”, Haddad said.

“Second place: ban some forms of payment. Bolsa Família card, credit card, none of these can be used to pay for bets. Third place: we will monitor CPF via CPF the evolution of bets and prizes… Fourth place: the issue of advertising, which is completely out of control.”

The minister explained that the individualized monitoring of the CPF will allow it to identify people who have developed an addiction to betting – with the possibility of alerting spouses and relatives – as well as reporting signs of money laundering through betting sites.

Haddad acknowledged that gambling addiction is already a public health problem in the country and lamented that websites have been operating in the country since 2018 without regulation and without companies paying taxes to operate in the country.
