Barcelona have signed Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who was free on the transfer market, the Spanish club said on Wednesday, after reversing his decision to withdraw to help the Catalan team due to the injury of Marc-André ter Stegen, who will be absent for a long time.
Ter Stegen, the team’s starting German goalkeeper, underwent surgery after rupturing the patellar tendon in his right knee at the weekend and is expected to miss the rest of the season.
25-year-old Iñaki Pena is expected to replace Ter Stegen, but Barcelona have sought to strengthen their squad with Szczesny, who announced his retirement last month after finishing his contract with Juventus.
The 34-year-old player had one year left on his contract with the Italian club, in which he would replace his idol Gianluigi Buffon.
Szczesny won three Serie A and Italian Cup titles in more than 250 appearances for Juventus, but lost his place to Michele Di Gregorio.
Barcelona lead the Spanish league with 21 points from eight games and will visit Alavés next Sunday.
