‘Monsters is the best thing to happen to the Menendez brothers in 30 years’: Series creator’s poignant response to family

Not a day goes by without talking about Monsters Season 2. And rarely for the better. A Netflix series about the murders of Jose and Keith Menendez by their two sons has come under fire from the victim’s family, two characters and some viewers.

Its co-creator, Ryan Murphy, defended himself for the first time on one of the most critical aspects of the series, but this time he goes back in more detail to the various controversies that have made headlines in recent days. And the showrunner is quite direct in his remarks.

Storyteller’s work

Ryan Murphy said in an interview Diversity That he had never met the Menendez brothers while writing the Monsters series and that he still didn’t see the point:

“I don’t care about that. But it’s very good Cooper (translated by Eric, editor’s note) was able to do this. Like Kim Kardashian, who I’m close to, and who was able to meet them. I believe in prison reform and all that it does. But I don’t know what I could tell them.

What would I ask them? I know what they mean. I believe in justice, but I don’t want to be part of the machine. It’s not my business. My job is to be a storyteller. I feel that I have fulfilled the contract.”

In the 2nd season of Monsters, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan decided not to take only the point of view of the Menendez brothers, but to go to the point of view of several heroes: the parents, the shrink, the shrink’s mistress, the journalist Dominic Dunne… creating a somewhat confusing series and for which it is quite difficult to distinguish the truth from the lie.

This is what is true and this is what was invented in the series

While the Menendez brothers await an answer from a Los Angeles court that should decide a new trial, the publicity surrounding their lives will surely benefit them.

As viewers discuss the issue of self-defense, Eric and Lyle can take advantage of this growing attention. As Ryan Murphy explains so well in the same interview:

“The show is the best thing that has happened to the Menendez brothers in the last 30 years. Millions of people around the world are talking about them. A documentary about them will be released on Netflix. The series allows people to debate: Should they get a new trial? Should they be released from prison?

What is happening in our society? Should people be locked up for life? Is there no chance of rehabilitation?” This interests me and many people talk about it. The show asks some really tough questions, and these brothers get another trial, in the court of public opinion. “
