Remember the case

In the municipality of João Dias, in Rio Grande do Norte, the tragedy of the death of mayor Marcelo Oliveira, murdered together with his father on August 27, meant that his widow, Maria de Fátima Mesquita da Silva, became the new candidate for mayor of the ‘União Brasil. Known as Fatinha de Marcelo, the 34-year-old woman’s candidacy was registered at the Electoral Tribunal. According to IBGE data, João Dias has just over 2 thousand inhabitants.

On September 6, Fatinha took up her husband’s profile on social media, changing the photo and publishing a statement. “I, Fatinha de Marcelo, wife of the one who dedicated his life to the well-being of our people, place myself at the forefront of this fight, I pledge to continue my husband’s work. Together with the people of João Dias, we will face fear and crime with unity, strength and faith. We will not bow to terror and together we will transform pain into courage and move forward.”

The candidate’s focus is on returning to the days of peace, as she said in a video: “I want to give peace of mind to the people of João Dias and say that I am here, firm and strong.”

Marcelo’s brother, Jessé Oliveira, 27, also from União Brasil, took over management of the municipality after the mayor’s death. He was appointed in a session held virtually on the 29th for security reasons. Jessé, who was president of the city council, will now have to hold the position until the end of the year and remains a candidate for re-election as a councilor. The deputy mayor elected in 2020, Damária Jácome, was removed by the courts in 2022 after reports of threats from the murdered mayor.

Public security in Rio Grande do Norte mobilized after the crime, resulting in the arrest of 14 people, including four suspects directly involved in the murder of Marcelo and his father, and 10 others accused of planning revenge. The authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a political motivation.
