Porto da Terra Preta collapses in the interior of the Amazon; families say there are missing people


According to family members, the municipality of Manacapuru has released a note mentioning the possibility that there are six missing




The port of Terra Preta, located in Manacapuru, Amazonas, was hit by a landslide this Monday 7th.

State Civil Protection informed affiliate Globo that a child was missing, but Manacapuru municipality released a statement mentioning the possibility that six children, aged between 6 and 64, were missing. Seven people were also hospitalized with minor injuries.

According to AgĂȘncia Brasil, the port was under construction, but continued to function as a strategic point for the transport of passengers and goods. The site hosts the waterways terminal and the municipal fisheries secretariat (Sempa) and is an important link between Manacapuru and other areas in the region.

The Port of Terra Preta handles a large flow of people involved in loading and unloading activities. Taxi and motorbike taxi services are also available on site. After the accident, wrecks of floating boats, pipes, houses and vehicles were seen in the river.

In a note, the DNIT (National Department of Transport Infrastructure) clarified that the Port of Terra Preta, located near the Small Public Port Facility (IP4), is not under its responsibility, only IP4 is under the management of entity.

DNIT technicians are already on site to carry out inspections in order to assess the extent of the damage and the risks to the safety of IP4.

“The accident that occurred in Porto da Terra Preta is probably caused by a seasonal phenomenon known as ‘fallen lands’, common at this time of year in the region. The DNIT immediately contacted the competent authorities, such as the Fire Brigade, the Police and Civil Protection,” the department said.
