Nasrallah’s replacement at Hezbollah’s command appears to have been eliminated, Israel’s defense minister says

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Tuesday that it appears the replacement for slain Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has been eliminated.

He did not provide further details.

Hashem Safieddine, a senior Hezbollah official, was expected to succeed Nasrallah.

“Hezbollah is a headless organization. Nasrallah has been eliminated, probably his replacement has also been eliminated,” Gallant told officers at the army’s northern command center in a short video segment distributed by the military. “There is no one to make decisions, no one to take action,” he said.

Safieddine had been leading Hezbollah alongside its deputy general secretary Naim Qassem since Nasrallah’s assassination and was expected to be formally elected as the next general secretary, although no official announcement has yet been made.

Qassem said in a televised statement on Tuesday that the group would elect a new secretary general and would announce it once it had done so.
