Two pilgrims died after being hit on the Presidente Dutra highwayin the Vale do Paraíba region, direction Aparecida (SP)according to the Federal Traffic Police (PRF). The two victims were traveling to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Aparecida on October 12.

The two accidents occurred on the night of last Tuesday 8th, on different sections of the federal highway. The first occurred around 8pm, when three members of the same family were hit by an interstate bus, on the side of the highway, in the city of Santa Isabel.
A 51-year-old man succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene. According to PRF, two other people suffered minor injuries. The bus driver was subjected to a breathalyzer test, which tested negative for alcohol consumption. The bus documentation was also in order.
The second collision occurred at 11.55pm, in the Pindamonhangaba region. The victim was identified as Riberto Ferreira, a 65-year-old pensioner living in São José dos Campos. He was hit by an unidentified vehicle, police said.
The circumstances of both incidents will be investigated by the judicial police.
For pilgrims making the journey on foot, the PRF makes the following recommendations:
- Pay particular attention, especially when approaching construction sites. Try to follow the paths indicated by the signs and never walk on the road;
- Wear light clothing and reflective jackets;
- When you are in a group, walk in single file;
- Proceed in the opposite direction to the vehicles;
- Avoid using your cell phone or any other equipment that may cause distractions while walking;
- Avoid walking at night, when visibility is reduced, especially in case of rain, since in addition to poor visibility, rain increases the possibility of accidents on the motorway;
- Plan your trip in advance, scheduling stopping points;
- Use sunscreen;
- Hydrate well.
