George Baldock, 31, was found dead in the swimming pool of his home.
Panathinaikos player George Baldock drowned. According to information from the website ‘Sportal.gr’, this was the conclusion of the autopsy carried out on the body, found on Wednesday night (9), in the swimming pool of his apartment, on the outskirts of Athens, Greece.
According to the same source, investigations indicate that the death occurred around 7pm, and the body was discovered by the police at 10pm. The alarm was raised by the player’s wife, who was in England and tried to contact him for several hours, asking him to call to congratulate her daughter.
There were no signs of foul play on Baldock’s body. Samples have been taken for toxicology tests, but the results are slow in arriving. Furthermore, near the pool, the police found a bottle of vodka and some glasses, sent for analysis. Images from the condominium’s security camera system were also collected.
Panathinaikos staff are in shock over Baldock’s death and players have paid tribute on social media. At the same time, Greek teammates also reacted, including the official team account, expressing “indescribable pain”.
Born in Buckingham, Baldock played most of his career for Milton Keynes Dons and Sheffield United, as well as spells at Northampton Town, Tamworth and ÍBV (Iceland). Of Greek origins, he received his first call-up for Greece in 2022 and, in the last transfer window, signed with Panathinaikos. However, he played just four matches for the club before his death, aged 31, from drowning, after an autopsy confirmed.
