The VW Golf turns 50 and we are the winners: the GTI will return!

The Volks classic garage at the São Bernardo do Campo (SP) plant celebrates the anniversary of the sports car with a cake and gets a Mk4.5 unit

Summary

On the occasion of the celebration for the 50th anniversary of the Golf, Volks confirmed the return of the model to Brazil in 2025. Here it will be sold again, imported, only in the GTI version, sporty and created as an image variant

Volks has reasons to celebrate this week: the Golf, one of its most iconic cars – together with the Beetle and the Gol – celebrates 50 years in 2024. With big news: now in its eighth generation, it is confirmed that it will return to the market next year , in 2025, with one of its most emblematic versions: the GTI.

To immortalize the moment, the brand invited journalists to its special garage, at the Anchieta factory, in São Bernardo do Campo (SP). There’s everything (the best the brand has ever produced), including a very rare example of the SP1, the last Kombi produced in the world and even a Beetle convertible.

How is the new Golf GTI

The new generation of the sports version, created as part of six of the eight generations of the car, is the fastest, strongest and craziest ever created. It will arrive here in 2025, five years after the car stopped selling (before the pandemic it only came in GTE, hybrid and import versions). Domestic production ended in 2019.

His return – along with the price that Volks will choose – will make his presence in the country something extraordinary. The Golf GTI is expected to be positioned as a niche car, or an image car, and cost around R $ 400,000.

Imported from Germany – and not Mexico, which currently ships the Jetta GLI here for R$250,990 – the new Golf will compete with models known as hot hatches, such as the Honda Civic TypeR, Toyota GR Corolla and Mercedes-AMG A35 and A45.

The eighth generation of the car, the one coming soon, is called “8.5” abroad because it has already received a restyling, which took place this year, with new headlights and rear lights and even more technology.

Inside it has large digital screens – 10.4″ or 12.9″ for the multimedia center, depending on the version – with assistants for voice commands and even connection to ChatGPT.

The engine remains a 2.0 turbo from the EA888 family, now known as LK3 evo4. It has 265 hp and 37.7 kgfm of torque and is controlled by a seven-speed dual-clutch automated transmission. The Golf GTI comes with front-wheel drive (the “R” has all-wheel drive) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds.

The maximum speed is 250 km/h.

We will therefore have the Golf GTI back in the country next year. It is also possible that the Golf R will appear here at some point, according to sources linked to Volkswagen after the arrival of the GTI. That would be for 2026 or later. All we have left is to cheer.
