Vasco beats Flamengo and is a two-time Rio Under 20 champion

After the 2-1 victory in the first leg, Cruz-Maltino, in São Januário, once again beat its biggest rival (1-0) and celebrated another cup at the base

Vasco is a two-time champion of Cariocao U20. This Saturday morning (12/10), Cruz-Maltino beat Flamengo 1-0, with a goal from Leo Jacó, in the first half. With the 2-1 victory in the first leg, Vasco beat Flamengo in Gávea and took the lead in the Carioca U20 final. Vasco fans celebrate a deserved and undefeated victory. The triumph, albeit minimal, reflects the superiority of the team, which missed big opportunities, even when Flamengo still had 11 players on the pitch, with Iago’s dismissal in the 19th minute of the first half.

Vasco’s hegemony in state competitions

Vasco thus demonstrated once again that, while Flamengo is recognized as world champions in the category, hegemony in state competitions belongs to Cruz-Maltino. In addition to the 2023 cup, the team had already won that Rio Cup above Flamengo himself. This Saturday Vasco raised two trophies: that of Carioca and that of Recopa Carioca. Having won the Copa Rio, the team won this trophy automatically, without having to compete. This was his sixteenth state. Fla was aiming for the 32nd cup (greatest champion of this competition, which had its first edition in 1920).

First half: Vasco devastating

Vasco started the final in devastating fashion. After four minutes, Bruno Lopes shoots and goalkeeper Lucas rebounds. Leo Jacó showed coolness, took the ball, dribbled past the archer and, despite being surrounded by three defenders, played the ball to make it 1-0. After seven minutes, JP shot towards the post. Cruz-Maltino dominated the match, to the euphoria of the fans present in São Januário.

Flamengo gets scared for the first time in the 13th minute, after a great move by Shola on the left, who passes for Lorran who shoots. However, Vasco’s defense reacted. Vasco continues to press, with JP who came close to scoring if it weren’t for a providential cut in defense. Flamengo’s situation gets complicated in the 19th minute, when defender Yago brings down Bruno Lopes, who is sent off for being the last man.

Dominant, Vasco narrowly failed to extend their lead in the 32nd minute. After all, Bruno Lopes received the ball in the area and, despite having everything to score, slipped. He tried a cross, but Alegria, almost on the line, missed the ball. In short, arriving at half-time only 1-0 down was almost a miracle for Flamengo.

Second half: Fla tries, but Vasco is champion

Vasco would only lose the cup if Flamengo managed to turn the situation around, and so they started playing deeper. Even with one player less, Flamengo almost always launches into attack and almost equalizes after 16 minutes. Shola’s move on the left falls to Guilherme, who shoots for a great save from Felipe. Finally, Lorran got the chance. But it was muffled. Shola remained Mengo’s most dangerous player. But the visiting team was unable to finish. Vasco is therefore a two-time Rio Under 20 champion.
