Why was the storm in SP so strong and sudden? The expert explains the phenomenon

Meteorologist MetSul commented on the intensity of the rain, the strength of the winds and the bluish hue of the rays in the State

The population of Sao Paulo was shocked on the afternoon of Friday 11th, due to the heavy and sudden rain that hit the state for a few hours. The storm killed at least 7 people in the state. The capital’s municipality recorded more than 200 reports of falling trees and branches.

THE Estadao contacted the meteorologist Estael Sias, of the MetSul company, who explained the causes of the phenomenon. “The main factor in the formation of the storm was the temperature contrast,” he says. “A cold front was advancing on São Paulo, with colder air in the interior and warmer air in the eastern part. This contrast is triggering the formation of heavy clouds, cumulonimbus clouds typical of thunderstorms, which have crossed the capital region and the metropolitan region” .

No new storms are expected this weekend, according to the municipality’s Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE).
