Rayssa Leal leaves the podium and Chloe Covell wins the ‘home’ stage of the World Skate League

The Brazilian competes for position against the Australian and Liz Akama, but is overtaken by Funa Nakayama and finishes fourth

I couldn’t Raysa Leal in the Australian phase of World Skating League. With lower laps than usual, the Brazilian had to invest a lot in the series of maneuvers also obtaining good scores and seemed destined to get on the podium, but was overtaken by the Japanese Funa Nakayamawho came third. The Australian Chloe Covell was the champion, followed by Liz Akamafrom Japan, in second place.

In the final, in addition to the trio who took the podium and the Brazilian, the gold medalist of the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, Momiji Nishiya and Ari Uemura, were also present. Leader of the women’s ranking, the Japanese Yumeka Oda also ended up eliminated

Rayssa’s second round was more solid, but still far from what the Brazilian had already demonstrated. She managed to send combinations of maneuvers and enjoyed a good part of the sequence. At the end of the lap a fall injures Rayssa, who remains with 7.1.

Chloe Covell was inspired by the home game. In two rounds he had no difficulty obtaining excellent marks and emerging in the rankings.

It was in the series of five maneuvers that Rayssa was at her boldest. The skateboarder slid down the long railing and earned a score of 8.2 to take the lead and prove she would fight to become champion. Closing the first series, however, Chloe is back in command.

After finishing her second participation in the series, Rayssa landed a flip, safely. With a perfect performance, the judges gave her an 8.5, putting Chloe on the list. Liz Akama played against the Australian and the Brazilian. The title race seemed to be between three.

On the last occasion, however, Funa Nakayama achieved a score of 8.7 and surpassed Rayssa. It was the highest score of the season.

The fourth lap had been reset for Rayssa. She had to go all-in on the last lap, but she crashed at the exit of the maneuver and had no chance of getting on the podium.

Liz Akama didn’t do enough to surpass Chloe Covell. The Australian was able to celebrate her second title in Sydney, her fourth victory in the Street League.

Giovanni Vianna is second in the best final of the men’s season

In the men’s category, Brazil was represented by Giovanni Vianna, who placed second. The champion was Japan’s Sora Shirai, who was spectacular, accumulating only 9 points in the series of maneuvers (9.0, 9.3 and 9.4, the highest total of the season). Chris Joslin closed out the podium.

Giovanni was solid in the first two laps. He closed the first part of the final with 8.6. Even with Sora’s 9.0, the Brazilian was in the top three.

In the first maneuver Vianna gets 8.7 and takes the lead, soon handed over to Sora. In last place was Nyjah Huston. The American had hurt his ankle in qualifying and injured his knee in the final. The pain hindered his performance.

Nyjah and Tommy Fynn stayed behind, while Sora, Giovanni, Joslin and Jhancarlos Gonzalez competed trick for trick. The Brazilian regained the lead with a 9.0 in the second manoeuvre. To pass Giovanni, Sora needed 8.8. The “samurai” managed to beat 9 clubs and showed that the lead would not be easy to maintain.

In the third round of the series, Joslin scored 9.1, followed by another “note” from Sora. The Japanese won the third 9 club, with 9.3. At that point, it could have been the winning note. It just wasn’t because he got even more later, with 9.4.

The decision remained as to who would complete the podium. With the fall of González, Giovanni confirmed himself among the top three. He finished with 9.6, the highest score of the event, moving up to second place. Joslin tried to catch the Brazilian and scored 9.5. Despite the high score, Giovanni maintained second place.

The final ended with four contestants with scores above 30. It was the best decision of the season so far.

The Sydney stage is the penultimate stage before the Super Crown, which will take place in Sao Paulo between 14 and 15 December.
