Absent from the prize list of the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, Andrea Arnold’s Bird was still one of the most beautiful films presented during the competition. The director’s sixth feature tells the story of Bailey, a 12-year-old girl who lives with her brother Hunter and her young father Bug in north Kent.

Single and fending for herself, Bailey meets a strange man named Bird. Free as a bird and elusive, he will teach one of the most beautiful lessons in life.

A few months after its presentation, the film is revealed through the first trailer. As usual, Andrea Arnold works with non-professional actors, with the exception of Barry Keoghan, the Saltburn star, who gives one of his best performances here.

A larger than life movie

The Bird allows us to reveal the young Nikia Adams, who is stunning in this film with raw violence but also imbued with poetry. The entire film was shot in real-life settings in England’s Gravesend, Northfleet and Bynne areas, in the heart of a poverty-stricken community. This authenticity comes across on screen while offering a wonderful moment of escapism.

Andrea Arnold has established herself thanks to her raw and unique style. He won the Jury Prize three times at the Cannes Film Festival for Red Road, Fish Tank and American Honey.

The Bird arrives in French cinemas on January 1.
