Is everyone dead in ‘El Hoyo 2’? The real meaning of the end of the movie

Although ‘El Hoyo 2’ solved some unknowns from the first film, such as Who was the woman looking for her son in “El Hoyo 1”it also left other questions unanswered.

For this reason, the film’s director, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, explained the meaning of the ending, and highlighted some details that not everyone saw in the Netflix film.

What do the children mean in ‘El Hoyo 2’? The director revealed the meaning of the ending

At the end of “El Hoyo 2,” Perebuan (Milena Schmidt) enacts her dead cell plan and blocks her airway so the guards can put the body-collecting strap on her.

However, his strategy does not go as expected, because when he descends to level 333 meet a boyand decides to save him. But to achieve this he puts his life in danger, and ends up hitting his head and losing a lot of blood.

Although not specified, ‘El Hoyo 2’ implies that Perempuan dies in the process, while managing to send the little boy upwards.

However, this ending left a lot of doubt, especially regarding the importance of children in this part of the film. The director of “El Hoyo 2” himself explained:

Business-wise, we see where the guys are coming from, which they place on the last level, 333, but metaphorically, it works for us as another parallel hole. In the end is how the spark of selfishness jumps. Everything works fine until one person crosses the line and then that’s it, you can’t stop it. The spark of selfishness bounces so fast. With children, we see it. Everything works fine, but then there is a push, then the other side breaks, and the rest feel justified in the mistake that someone else fought to not be left behind and not be the dumbest. So, in the end, this chaos prevails and the important thing is not to go down, but to be above the others.”

In other words, Gaztelu-Urrutia explains that children are a reflection of what happens in the hole, since they play class in the race to get to the top, as it happens in prison.

Is the Hole a void? The end of “El Hoyo 2”

There are those who have interpreted the hole as limbo or purgatory. And there are elements of the film that suggest so.

For example, the fact that children can only be seen by those who cross certain thresholds, such as Perempúan. In fact, the director Falder Gaztelo-Urrita has made some statements about it.

Is everyone dead in ‘El Hoyo 2’?

There comes a point in “El Hoyo 2” (after Perebuan eats a piece of the painting) that the film makes us doubt whether the protagonist is really alive or whether, on the contrary, she is in the “afterlife”.

This idea was already discussed after the release of the original film. At the time Gaztelu-Urrutia gave his interpretation of the case of Goreng, its protagonist:

For me, this lower level does not exist. Goreng is dead before he arrives and this is just his interpretation of what he felt he had to do.

Since Perempuan meets Goreng in “The Hole 2”, this link would imply that Perempuan is also dead.

In fact, the director himself referred to this association in more detail and confessed that “El Hoyo 2” is made on purpose to provoke a discussion among the viewers:

Hole 2 ends at exactly the same point as the end of the first film, hinting at the relationship between Goreng (Iván Massagué) and Perempuán (Milena Smit). There’s a logic to it all, but it’s deliberately constructed that way to provoke discussion with an ending where we don’t know if they’re alive or dead, what’s true and what’s a lie, but there are clues out there for those who look for them. The movie is full of easter eggs.
