The statement by Ricardo Nunes (MDB) that he saw children playing in Praça da Sé, around 10pm, was one of the cornerstones of the debate this Saturday 19th, promoted by Record con Estadão and Rádio Eldorado. Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), with whom he is contesting the second round for the municipality of São Paulo, joked and called the statement “fantasy”. This Sunday, the 20th, the mayor’s electoral campaign released the video to the press.

The recording, sent to Earthwas recorded by Gil Gondim, responsible for Brunch at Catedral da Sé. She also lives in the region.

There are three videos. In one of them he appears running with a girl. In another, three children who were with family members jumped a Military Police protective fence to hug the officers.

In the last one, Gondim appears again playing with a girl and, out and about, filming families walking around the square. In all the videos the sky is dark. The report asked Nunes’ counsel where these documents came from and the answer was “several days and nights,” without specifying the dates.

On social media, Gil Gondim shares accounts of his routine in the Cathedral. She posted a photo alongside Nunes in May and is followed by the current mayor on social media.

Participated in the debate

Nunes brought this story to light on Saturday evening, when Estadão special reporter Marcelo Godoy asked Nunes, in one of the rounds of the debate, whether he would feel safe walking around Praça da Sé in downtown São Paulo, to 11pm.

The current mayor praised the issue and responded: “Today we have almost 7,500 metropolitan civil guards. (…) The municipality of São Paulo has reduced cases of robbery and theft by 60%. The other day I was in Praça da Sé, it was around 10pm, the children were playing. But we have a lot of work ahead of us“.

Taking the time to comment on Godoy’s question to the mayor, Guilherme Boulos mocked the re-election candidate’s response. “Have you seen that he doesn’t even blush? The children playing in Praça da Sé, the population smiling and walking with their cell phones in their hands. Look at the fantasy, the fiction he puts together. He didn’t answer whether he would walk calmly down the street with his cell phone,” he said.
