Taking a child to a restaurant can be an extremely challenging experience. In the past, some networks focused on playrooms or toys filled with plastic balls. Today, however, these spaces are increasingly rare.
The most common thing is to see mothers and fathers giving their children a cell phone or tablet to distract themselves. And it is precisely with this behavior in mind that a fast food giant in the United States has decided to innovate.
Far beyond chicken sandwiches and milkshakes, Chick-fil-A decided to launch its own app with animations and original programs for children. Furthermore, the platform must have podcasts, recipes, games and e-books aimed at families.
Chick-fil-A has no units here in Brazil. The brand, however, is one of the largest in the United States. There are more than 3,000 restaurants and, as of 2019, Chick-fil-A ranks third in industry sales, behind only Starbucks and McDonald’s.
To give you an idea, the store’s revenue surpassed the $7.8 billion barrier last year, according to company information. Part of this money will be invested in this ‘streaming’, which is expected to premiere on November 18th.
An unusual move
Will it work?
Look, it’s hard to make a prediction. But the fact is that Chick-fil-A enters this market without much responsibility. This is because no one expects anything from her in this industry. It is also a family-run business. In other words, there will be no shareholders demanding explanations for this significant marketing expense.
Another plus for the fast food chain is that its streaming doesn’t need to make a profit. The idea is that it helps drive snack sales, but there is no obligation to “pay for it,” as there is with traditional media companies.
Disney, for example, wants its Disney+ to be sustainable. This means that subscriptions and commercials must cover the production and licensing costs of films and series. The same happens with Netflix – and many others.
The problem is that production costs are extremely high, while it is increasingly difficult to maintain subscriptions and attract new viewers, amidst the gigantic offer of different streams.
Chick-fil-A will not have these challenges. It will be an adventure. But an adventure without great risks – and one that could work.
