To watch on streaming: 5 movies for an exciting evening

Thanks to streaming platforms, fans of horror films can draw from a well-stocked catalog to (re)discover classics, discover gems or check out new releases.

A few days before Halloween, the festival of horrors, we have selected 5 original horror films from various platforms that have been released this year to watch for a night of thrills, mixing paranormal, thriller, hemoglobin and science fiction.

Apartment 7A (at Paramount+)

Natalie Erica James with Julia Garner, Dianne Wiest, Jim Sturgess.

In New York in 1965, a dancer was injured. Soon he finds himself in the dark forces when a strange old couple promises him a chance to win a star.

Why do we watch it?

Because it’s a prequel to the iconic movie, Rosemary’s Baby! Roman Polanski’s film, released in 1968, is a horror classic about the nightmare of a pregnant woman oppressed by neighbors who are preparing the arrival of the Antichrist. Apartment 7A tells the story of Terry, the secondary character of the film. And this new heroine is played by a very talented actress: the young Julia Garner, who was revealed by the Netflix series Ozark and Inventing Anna.

Inside Game (on Netflix)

By Greg Jardine with Brittany O’Grady, James Morosini, Gavin Leatherwood.

A group of friends gather for a pre-wedding party that turns into an existential nightmare when one of the guests shows up with a mysterious game that awakens long-buried secrets, desires, and resentments.

Why do we watch it?

Because it is the first feature film and caused a sensation at festivals! If you are looking for originality, the interior game is for you. Greg Jardine’s film is an original and stylized thriller that questions its audience and is based on multiple twists. It’s also notable for its cast’s mirrored performances and pop, vintage aesthetic, and its controlled and rhythmic staging.

Hold Your Breath (on Disney+)

Will Joynes and Kerry Cruise with Sarah Paulson, Amiah Miller, Alona Jane Robbins.

Oklahoma, 1930s, a young mother, haunted by her past, is caught in a terrible dust storm. He is convinced that his family is threatened by a mysterious presence. He will do anything to protect her…

Why do we watch it?

Because Sarah Paulson is the hero of Hold your breath! The actor gained recognition thanks to his participation in almost every season of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology American Horror Story, and he also excels in horror films. Sarah Paulson is one of the queens of horror and has also starred in the series Ratched and the films Bird Box, Glass and Run. If Sarah Paulson is being cast in a horror movie, we’re going!

If you’re looking for other horror movies to watch on Disney+, you can find the list on this page.

Salem Lot (at MAX)

Gary Dauberman with Lewis Pullman, Mackenzie Lee, Bill Kemp.

Ben Mears returns to his vampire-infested hometown of Salem. He manages to convince a small group of believers to fight the undead.

Why do we watch it?

Because Salem’s Lot is an adaptation of a novel by the master of horror: Stephen King! The contemporary author who is perhaps the most adapted into television and film is the one who most often supports adaptations of his work, and this is the case with Salem’s Lot. On his X account (formerly Twitter), he describes the feature film as “an old-fashioned horror film.” So, if you like the world of Stephen King, then watch this new adaptation from the director of Annabelle: House of Evil.

If you’re looking for other horror movies to watch on MAX, the list can be found on this page.

House of Decay (on Prime Video)

Bridget Savage Cole and Daniel Crude with Ariana Debose, Barbie Ferreira, Ariane Moed.

An ambitious chef opens a restaurant on a remote property, where he must deal with the chaos of the kitchen, crushing self-doubt, and a haunted presence that threatens to sabotage him at every turn.

Why do we watch it?

For a film aesthetic that leans less towards the gore than the fantasy! But House of Spoils still remains a horror fiction film that combines high-tension thriller and mystery with immersion in a kitchen nightmare. If you like movies with a twist, this is for you! And it’s worn by two talented actors: Ariana Deboz (West Side Story) and Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria).
