James Wan only directed and wrote the first Saw film; in others, the filmmaker only acted as producer of the projects
Despite having directed and been one of the screenwriters of the first Saw, James Wan he did not take on creative roles again on subsequent releases (he only produced). Because of this, the filmmaker revealed how he would have taken the iconic horror saga “by a different path.”
During an interview with Peoplein which he opined that the reverse bear trap is the best in the franchise, Wan spoke about the creative decisions of Saw throughout the films. “But that’s why I’ve never necessarily been critical of where the franchise has gone,” he said.
So he praised Lionsgatethe studio responsible for the franchise, and “all the subsequent directors” who helmed the films: “They all did a great job shepherding this franchise and [continuando] to do as many as they did. So kudos to them for knowing what to do and the direction they felt they needed to take this in.”
Furthermore, the director discussed the time he spent producing the first film, released on February 4, 2005 in Brazilian cinemas. According to him, there is nothing perfect about this film, besides “the production of Saw It was literally me spending every day fighting for things I can’t get.”
So while the film and the franchise itself is a comfort to others, as a filmmaker, as a director, you can’t unsee all the things you didn’t get. And I think that’s how we are as artists, we don’t really see that the glass is half full — we see that the glass is half empty.
Finally, James Wan explained how he still has “a little bit of that kind of mentality” about Saw“but obviously people loved it. And definitely now I can, I guess, look back through a rosier glass, as opposed to how I felt back then.”
