Brazil’s Libertadores final established that the country will have four representatives in next year’s tournament.
The final of the Libertadores between Botafogo and Atlético Mineiro guaranteed the fourth Brazilian representation at next year’s Club World Cup. In this way the country will become the nation with the largest number of teams participating in the tournament organized by FIFA in the United States.
Since the number of places in some continents is higher than the number of qualifying tournaments held in the last four years, the entity has determined the ranking by ranking, with a limit of two clubs per country.
However, if three or more clubs from the same country were champions of the competitions, they would all be guaranteed the World Cup. This is what happened with Brazil, as Palmeiras, Flamengo and Fluminense were the last winners of the Libertadores.
Before the final was decided, Brazil was tied with Mexico, with three teams guaranteed in the tournament. The Mexicans will be represented by Monterrey, León and Pachuca, who have won three of the last four Concacaf Nations Leagues.
Botafogo and Atlético Mineiro will define the last place in the Club World Cup, while the other 31 teams are already known. The most recent was Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, who secured their place after having their best season in the MLS regular season.
