Netflix: Rated 3.9 out of 5, this is one of the best series of 2023 and season 2 just arrived!

The Diplomat, which captivated Netflix subscribers with its first season, returns for an even more intense Season 2. Created by former The West Wing and Homeland screenwriter Deborah Kahn, the series deftly blends political intrigue and personal drama. With a rating of 3.9 out of 5, it stands out as one of the most popular Netflix series of 2023. Here’s what this new season has in store for viewers.

Instant return after explosive rocks

Season 2 picks up exactly where the first season left off: after an attack in London, during which the main characters, Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) are left in a critical situation.

This new story sees Kate, the US Ambassador to the United Kingdom, springing into action to unravel the threads of this major political crisis. He suspects British Prime Minister Nicole Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) of orchestrating a fake attack to provoke conflict with Russia. A tense context to say the least…

Reduced season

The creators chose to reduce the number of episodes to six, thereby increasing the pace of the story. This helps to refocus the narrative, emphasizing Kate’s skills and the complexity of her marriage to Hal.

The exchanges between the two characters turn into genuine verbal banter, often punctuated by unexpected events such as the absurd interruptions that are the series’ signature. This dynamic provides a fair balance between political drama and well-measured humor.

The arrival of a new political figure

One of the big new features this season is the introduction of Vice President Grace Penn, played by Allison Janney (formerly of CJ West Wing ), who will play the title role. His character, embroiled in a scandal, could make Kate his successor, which adds a lot of stake to the ambassador.

The face-to-face interaction between the two women – two outstanding actresses – offers powerful moments where the series questions the notion of power and female leadership. This unexpected dynamic adds a new dimension to the series, turning it toward a portrayal of women in roles of power. Time-wise, given current events, we couldn’t be more precise!

Very nice production

We don’t say it often enough, but American Netflix series exported outside of the United States are often very polished. This is proven again here, with filming in iconic locations such as St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The settings and attention to detail add to the authenticity of the series, which spawns subplots around political issues such as Scottish independence. It is also very relevant.

With careful production and heightened narrative intensity, Season 2 of The Diplomat takes its place among Netflix’s best series. Lovers of political dramas, here’s a series both entertaining and enlightening about US foreign policy.
