A politician was caught on video removing banknotes from his trousers and handing them to another person inside a car
The Federal Police (PF) has opened an investigation into the delivery of a wad of cash by Airton Souza (PL), elected mayor of Canoas, to an as yet unidentified person. The investigation was opened after a video circulated on social media showing Airton Souza removing a bundle of R$100 notes from his trousers and handing it to another occupant of the vehicle. The deadline for completing the survey is 30 days, with the possibility of extension.
On October 27, during the second electoral round, a video circulated on social media in which Airton Souza, elected mayor of Canoas by the PL, took a wad of money out of his trousers and handed it to another person inside a ‘car. In response, the Public Electoral Ministry requested on October 29 that the Federal Police investigate the case.

On Monday, October 28, Airton Souza was questioned by Rádio Gaúcha about a video circulating on the Internet, in which he appears to remove a wad of money from his pants and hand it to another person inside a car. Souza specified that it was a payment for personal commitments, unrelated to the electoral campaign. He further explained that the money comes from economic reserves intended to pay a personal debt.
“It has been on my tax return for over 10 years, I always make an economic reserve of what I earned during the year. Every year I set aside 10%, 15% and leave a reserve of resources. And there I was honoring a personal commitment. It wasn’t inside the committee, it was inside a car. Oh, and why was it on my waist? Because putting it in your pocket would attract attention“he said.
During the interview, the mayor-elect said he did not remember exactly when the incident occurred.
“I can’t specify the date, but it’s been a while. I think it’s been months, he replied. Likewise, Airton said he prefers not to say who passed the bundle of money. Asked if he could reveal what personal effort was paying off, he replied: “No, no, I prefer to reserve the right. It is my personal commitment and the matter is closed.“.
On Tuesday (29th), questioned once again about the facts during the Jornal do Almoço, on RBS TV, Airton Souza repeated the tone of the previous interview, underlining that he would only talk more about the delivery of the money if an investigation had been launched open.
“I was honoring a personal commitment that concerns me and not my public life. If I have to say (who I gave the money to), let there be an investigation. I have my life completely transparent. I have no reason to denounce the people who are part of this. Whoever recorded with malicious intent exposes“he declared.
On the same day, prosecutor Denise Sassen de Castro, of Canoas, sent a request to open an investigation into the case to the Superintendency of the Regional Federal Police of Rio Grande do Sul. The investigation was confirmed this Thursday (31) by the investigative body.
