The Lula government reacts to Maduro’s provocations and says it is surprised by the “offensive tone and personal attacks”

In an official note from Itamaraty, Brazil declares that it does not want to interfere in the internal affairs of its neighboring country and protests against the rise of Chavismo.

The government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has broken its silence this Friday, the 1st, and reacted to the series of provocations by the regime of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro against the Brazilian president and members of the Palácio do Planalto and Itamaraty. In a statement, the Lula government said it was surprised by the “offensive tone” against the country and its national symbols, adopted by Maduro and his Chavismo followers.

“The Brazilian government is surprised by the offensive tone adopted by the demonstrations of the Venezuelan authorities towards Brazil and its national symbols”, reads the statement released by Itamarty.

“The option of personal attacks and rhetorical escalations, as a substitute for political and diplomatic channels, does not correspond to the respectful way in which the Brazilian government treats Venezuela and its people.”

The reaction comes after Venezuelan security forces posted a montage on social media featuring Lula’s silhouette, his face in shadow, and the Brazilian flag in the background. The image is accompanied by the warning: “Whoever creates problems for Venezuela will be in trouble…”

The Brazilian government is surprised by the offensive tone adopted by the Venezuelan authorities’ demonstrations towards Brazil and its national symbols.

The option of personal attacks and rhetorical escalations, as a substitute for political and diplomatic channels, does not correspond to the respectful way in which the Brazilian government treats Venezuela and its people.

Brazil has always highly valued the principle of non-intervention and fully respects the sovereignty of each country and especially that of its neighbors.

The Brazilian government’s interest in the Venezuelan electoral process stems, among other things, from its status as a witness to the Barbados Accords, to which it was invited, and from monitoring the July 28 elections.

The Brazilian government remains convinced that partnerships must be based on frank dialogue, respect for differences and mutual understanding.
