The Florida team loses 2-1 to Atlanta United, forcing Game 3 to take place in the first round of the round of 16
In an uninspired evening from Lionel Messi, Inter Miami lost 2-1 to Atlanta United this Saturday (2), in the second match of the MLS round of 16. Davi Martinez scored for the Florida team, but Derrick Williams and Xande Silva secured the breakthrough for the hosts, at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
With the defeat, Inter Miami finds itself tied with Atlanta United on goal difference. After all, Messi & Co.’s team won the first of three matches 2-1, with goals from Luís Suárez and Jordi Alba. The teams will then face each other in game 3 of the first round of 16 with direct elimination. The match will be played next Saturday (9th), at 10pm (Brasilia time).
The summary of the game
In a first half devoid of good opportunities, the goal that opened the scoring only came in the 40th minute, due to an error by Brad Guzan, an expert former Aston Villa goalkeeper, when substituting the ball. Inter Miami regained possession of the ball and Héctor Martínez took advantage of the free goal. After the break, Atlanta showed the strength to fight back. So, in the 13th minute, Pedro Amador crossed just enough for Derrick Williams to seal the tie with a header. In the final minutes, in the 43rd minute, the ball is free in the area and Saba Lobzhanidze volleys and hits the crossbar. But, when the lights went out, there was a shower of ice water immediately after Messi had a goal disallowed for offside. The Atlanta team played an excellent collective game until the ball reached Xande Silva, who launched a bomb from outside the area to turn the game around.
