Thirteen years after Terrence Malick and The Tree Life, the Palme d’Or went to an American: Sean Baker, who turned the Croisette thanks to Anora. If his first film released in France was Tangerine, in 2015, he was particularly distinguished by The Florida Project, two years later, before taking the first steps in the Cannes competition in 2021.
That year, Red Rocket left empty-handed, but it was only a delay before the director won the prize with Anora. Mike Madison’s feature film, released in our theaters on October 30th, has everything to please the general public and become one of the top-rated Palme d’Ors of the 21st century on AlloCiné. But the leader of the rating is still in Korea.
Unsurprisingly, given how unanimous the film seems, it’s Parasite that dominates the debate with its average rating of 4.5 out of 5 from 29,662 ratings. So far the world’s last Palme d’Or, the feature film that brought South Korea to the list, ahead of The Pianist (4.4), a duo consisting of I, Daniel Blake and Family Affair (4.2), followed by Anatomy of a Fall. (4.1).
Like Parasite, the latter made its way to the Oscars a few months later. But where Justin Triet walked away with the trophy for Best Original Screenplay, Bong Joon-Ho hit harder and defied the odds to win the Best Picture and Best Director awards, confirming his status as a phenomenon.
Some excerpts from reviews from Internet users who rated Parasite 5 out of 5
Anatol C : “Parasite is a masterpiece of cinema. The film is full of brilliant symmetrical shots and the cinematography is impeccable. The vastness of the house where most of the situations take place is very well emphasized and the different shots give this house a real soul. Some sections use slow motion and this enhances the image, we also remember the hermit at the end Part of the rain that is precious in production.
Alice025: “Bong Joon-ho’s portrayal of two families, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, isn’t just black and white. And thanks in part to that certain realism and love of their families, this movie ‘Parasite’ is absolutely surprising. Funny and heartbreaking at the same time, it Definitely worth watching again and again.
Jean-Marc P: What elevates Parasite to the status of a masterpiece is the sheer ease with which Bong Joon-ho’s film moves from a thriller to a horror film or comedy to another, much darker social satire. The staging and rhythm turn it upside down, a journey as dense and varied in emotion that brings us back to the essence of cinema with this Palme d’Or award!”
Parasite is a masterpiece of cinema
Luke S.: “It’s a very mysterious film, but it’s good! We get a lot of unexpected emotions. The actors are perfect, the script has nothing to complain about. Bong Joon Ho shows his talent once again with Parasite, which also received the Palm R. “An.”
pfloyd1: “I love Korean movies, jewels of cinema, often with very careful productions. Parasite is a gem, this movie tells the story of a poor family, not really special, living in the slums of the city, struggling to get out of their financial situation. Troubled by unemployment…until the son’s friend Not advised to take English lessons to a rich family. Disturbing scenes, sometimes funny or dramatic, it’s full of emotions A clever mix that these very good actors give us, a very good film with a flawless production.
Isabel EC: “Wonderful, deep, funny and disturbing. A bit like Korea’s New Savages. A film that will make you laugh, not ‘make you laugh’, that brings social and societal reflection to South Korea, in which it can be projected very well. All the actors are believable, human, a roguelike film, sometimes Grand as well as tragic.
Parasite is a powerful, thrilling fable that tugs at the heartstrings in a universal way, and an immense film from a filmmaker who still had nothing to prove.
NaughtyDoc: “Between genre thriller and raunchy comedy, between libertarian manifesto and heartbreaking signal of social distress, Parasite is a powerful, moving tale that captures the heart in a universal way, and an immense film from a filmmaker who still has nothing left.” Prove it.”
Effie Stoneham: “What a movie!!! One of a kind, I’ve never seen anything like it. Seeing this movie is a real experience, especially since I’ve only seen BA once, so I had everything to discover. We go crescendo from almost-comedy to thriller. The cast is incredible, young The woman who plays the daughter of the family (Ki-jung) is pieced together to finally have this rendition of immense sadness, where every detail matters to the fullest. to appreciate this masterpiece”.
