Summary

A woman overwhelmed by floods caused by Hurricane Helene is found a month later

The body of a 30-year-old woman swept away by floods caused by Hurricane Helene in the United States more than a month ago was found on Wednesday. Rosa Andrade, 29, was one of six plastic factory workers who died at the company’s Erwin, Tennessee, site during the hurricane. The information was confirmed by WBIR, an NBC affiliate.

Rosa leaves behind her husband and two children. Her body was found on an interstate highway, Interstate 26, on Oct. 30, and she was identified the next day, according to authorities. It was found among the debris left by the hurricane, about 9 meters deep.

At the time of the flood, 11 workers were in the factory and 5 were rescued alive. Survivors said employees were prohibited from leaving the site until the parking lot was flooded and a blackout occurred, according to information from the Associated Press news agency.

The flooding began after the Nolichucky River, which flows behind the factory, swelled. The river, which is normally 60 centimeters deep, reached 9 meters on the day of the flood. About 5 million liters of water per second flowed through it, double that of Niagara Falls, causing its destruction.

Tennessee investigators took statements against the plastics company where Rosa worked. The cause of death of employees is also investigated, as well as working and safety conditions.

Impact Plastics owner Gerald O’Connor said no workers were forced to continue working and that the site was evacuated about 45 minutes before the force of the water overtook the industrial park.

According to authorities, Hurricane Helene has already caused the deaths of 224 people. Relatives of company employees sued Impact Plastics in court.

Rosa’s husband, Francisco Javier Guerrero, told WBIR that he spoke with her while she was still inside the factory. She would have greeted him and asked her husband to take care of the couple’s children.
