“Far, But Near” is the theme of the 9th edition of São Paulo Chinese Film Festivalcarried out by the Confucius Institute at Unesp, which is available online and free of charge throughout Brazil. From November 13th to 30th, the public will have the opportunity to watch eight contemporary classic Chinese cinematographic works, most of them unreleased and not available on any other streaming service in the country. Curated by Shi WenxueMaster of Cinema Science from the Beijing Film Academy, and Lilith Lifounder of LiLiMB Culture, the films selected for the 2024 edition of the exhibition celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Brazil and China, taking the public on a cinematic journey through the Asian country, its traditions and worldview.

The program also portrays urban love in Waiting for Lovefrom Shixian Wuand celebrates traditional Chinese arts in The Legend of the White Serpentfrom Xianfeng Zhang. To complete, Four Springsfrom Qingyi Luconsidered one of the Ten Best Chinese Language Films according to the Shanghai Film Critics Association, captures the essence of the seasons, and Flavors of Life uses gastronomy as a metaphor for life’s experiences.
According to the director of the Confucius Institute at Unesp, Prof. Luis Antonio Paulinoover the last ten years, the Show has been a window into China, its culture and its filmmakers. “More than one hundred high-quality productions have already brought moving stories and the vibrant voice of China to Brazilian audiences,” he noted.
About the Exhibition
Since 2016, in partnership with the Municipal Secretariat of Culture of São Paulo through Spcine and the CCSP, the Confúcio Institute at Unesp has held an annual Chinese Film Show to promote Chinese culture, share stories and voices, deepen understanding and friendship and continue consolidating a Chinese cultural event in Brazil.
