New on Netflix: A sci-fi movie rated 4.2 out of 5 that we can’t wait for a sequel

In 2019, audiences discovered Alita Battle Angel, a live-action adaptation of Gunnm’s manga, in theaters. In this futuristic world, viewers follow a young cyborg woman (Rosa Salazar) who is brought in by a doctor (Christoph Waltz).

He quickly discovers the unique fighting skills that those in power absolutely want to master. If he can escape them, he can save his friends, family, and the world he’s come to love.

Produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez, this big-budget sci-fi film ($170 million) drew no less than 2 million viewers to French theaters and allowed Fox to bring in 404 million greenbacks worldwide, despite a very disappointing score. American territory.

Although the ending of Alita Battle Angel called for a sequel, the project was shelved. Primarily because the revenue wasn’t exciting enough in the US, but also because the film was released during Disney’s takeover of Fox. And the start of construction on this set was not in the program of the big watch house.

Irony in July 2023

After lobbying Disney several times for an agreement in principle, Rodriguez placed all his hopes on James Cameron. The latter works with studios, especially on Avatar films. And it seems to have paid off.

In an interview in July 2023, the filmmaker revealed that he was looking into two sequels to Alita Battle Angel. If the project is half-confirmed, we haven’t had any news since then. Rumors suggest that Rodriguez will return behind the camera and that Rosa Salazar is set to reprise her role.

With the rather long post-production involved in the quality of the special effects, we shouldn’t expect this Alita Battle Angel 2 to hit our screens until 2026 or even 2027, if the film still holds up. It could also bring back Mahershala Ali, Jennifer Connelly and Michelle Rodriguez.

Fans are also waiting for one thing: to see what the heavenly city of Zalem looks like, which we will see at the end of the first part, and to see the battle between our cyborg hero and the villain Nova.

But in the meantime, you have a chance to see or watch Alita Battle Angel because it’s finally available on Netflix!
