The Canadian group advances in the R$ 13.7 billion project to extract potassium chloride in Amazonas

The project has an annual production capacity of 2.2 million tons of potash; The company expects to start production in 2028 or early 2029.

The Canadian group Brazil Potash Corp. plans to begin, by mid-2025, the installation of a mine for the extraction and processing of potassium in Autazes, municipality Amazonian 113 kilometers from Manaus. The mineral reserves are located near the Madeira River, which will be used as a flow route to Brazil’s main market for the consumption of fertilizersthe Midwest.

The investment planned by the Canadian company is 2.5 billion dollars (equivalent to R$ 13.7 billion) and the project foresees an annual production capacity of 2.2 million tonnes of potash. The useful life of the mine, which will be underground (800 meters deep), is estimated at 23 years, considering the current reserves of sylvinite (mineral that contains potassium salts) authorized for extraction. The company expects to start production in 2028 or early 2029.

Potassium is one of the main inputs used as fertilizer in large-scale agricultural production: it is one of the three elements to obtain the NPKa mixture of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, from which the fertilizer itself is obtained. Brazilian agriculture largely depends on imported inputs for the production of fertilizers: it is estimated that around 80% of the fertilizers consumed in the country are of foreign origin. According to data from the government and agricultural sector associations, of the amount of potassium the country currently consumes each year, 95% comes from abroad: Canada, Russia, Belarus, Germany and Israel.
