The S&P 500 briefly breached the 6,000-point mark on Friday and closed with its biggest weekly percentage gain of the year, as Donald Trump’s election victory and a possible Republican Party victory in the US Congress fueled expectations of favorable trade policies.
The Federal Reserve’s widely expected 25 basis point interest rate cut on Thursday also supported stocks this week.
According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 index gained 0.39% to 5,996.62 points. The Nasdaq technology index recorded a positive change of 0.09%, to 19,286.66 points. The Dow Jones rose by 0.62% to 43,998.73 points.
