Lazaro Ramos Launches US Oscar Campaign for Feito Pipa

Brazilian actor Lazaro Ramos has arrived in Los Angeles to launch the international campaign for the drama Feito Pipa ahead of the 2027 Academy Awards.

The Brazilian Film Academy selected the feature to represent Brazil at the Hollywood ceremony, where the production is seeking a nomination in the Best International Feature Film category.

Ramos, 48, is attending the Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival alongside the movie's director, Allan Deberton, and cast members Teca Pereira and Yuri Gomes. The California festival began on Sunday, November 1, and runs through Thursday, November 5.

The annual event provides Brazilian filmmakers with an established platform in the United States to showcase contemporary productions to American audiences and industry executives.

Promotional tour across Brazil and the United States

The Los Angeles screenings follow an extensive domestic promotional schedule for the drama, which originated in the northeastern state of Ceara and carries the international title Gugu's World. In a video published on social media, Ramos explained that the team had been actively campaigning across Brazil before traveling abroad.

Ramos said that during the previous week alone, he had visited Sao Paulo, Salvador, Fortaleza, and Rio de Janeiro to promote the film. He stated in the video that he was traveling to Los Angeles for the Brazilian Film Festival to make a significant impact with the production in the United States.

Following its run at the Los Angeles festival, Feito Pipa is scheduled to screen in Chicago on November 7. The film is also due to visit several other American cities as part of its promotional tour, building on an international festival run that has already seen the feature screened in Germany, China, Mexico, and Italy.

Screenings in major American cities are a standard part of awards campaigns, helping foreign contenders build visibility among voters ahead of nomination deadlines.

Screenplay themes and cinematic approach

Feito Pipa has already earned accolades on the international festival circuit. The narrative follows a young child who finds a sanctuary of affection and personal freedom through a close relationship with their grandmother, while confronting domestic tensions and questions regarding personal identity.

In an interview with CNN Brasil, Ramos said he firmly believed in the film's chances of securing an Oscar nomination. He highlighted the sensitivity with which the screenplay handled intricate subject matter and praised the production for its ability to refresh cinematic storytelling.

Ramos explained that he felt the film took a step beyond previous Brazilian cinema by bringing together diverse, sensitive issues. He noted that the story tackled father and son relationships, the life of a queer child, Alzheimer's disease, and the intergenerational bond between grandmother and grandchild within a single cohesive work.

He added that the film contained a poetic beauty that nourished the hearts of both audiences and filmmakers, prompting new ways to explore vital daily issues while showing that cinema must continually reinvent itself. Ramos also said the production discovered fresh methods to address domestic and social realities without losing the distinct qualities of Brazilian filmmaking.

The road to the 2027 Academy Awards

The Academy Award for Best International Feature Film is presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States with predominantly non-English dialogue. Each participating country can submit only one official entry per year, chosen by an approved national selection body.

In Brazil, that responsibility falls to the Brazilian Film Academy, which selects the national representative. The submitted titles compete for a spot on a 15-film shortlist before voters choose the final five nominees.

Ramos is one of Brazil's most celebrated cultural figures, with a career across cinema, television, and theater spanning three decades. Known internationally for performances in films such as Madame Sata and Carandiru, he has long championed Brazilian arts on the global stage.

Feito Pipa is scheduled to make its nationwide theatrical debut in Brazilian cinemas on Thursday, November 5.
