In an interview with Chris Castellani Chris and company On YouTube last September, Star Wars prequel trilogy coordinator Nick Gillard revealed that two other people were close to playing the role of Darth Maul before Ray Park was cast.
Indeed, when Chris Castellan asked if that was the plan Ray Park Played by Darth Maul or simply his apprentice, Nick Gillard Explained what really happened.
“He was not a stuntman. Ray was a gymnast. A friend of mine was making a movie called Mortal Combat, before The Phantom Menace, and he was using Ray as a gymnast. So when I was looking for Darth Maul, he suggested it and that’s how I got into Rey. In the beginning, there were a number of very famous actors who were going to play this role, very serious actors, I can’t say. But to me it always had to be a trick because, as I said Robin GurlandThe casting director has two lines, the rest is physical and 4 hours of makeup, we have to double this guy, so a lot of work for everyone. Let’s do it with the stuntman and he said ok.“
He continued: “Then I wanted to find the right person. So it took me a while. At one point he came into my office with a trick book and said, “This guy is absolutely perfect! Looks like a heroin addict, we need that!’ What he didn’t realize was that he was showing my own page, he wasn’t looking at the photo very well. I told him, “You’ll never get that guy.” He replied, “Why? It’s Star Wars!’ I said, “Robin, it’s me!” And he said to me: “You are perfect, you should play!” I told him I couldn’t play, I didn’t have time. I didn’t have time to waste 4 hours doing makeup. That’s how Ray became. She was absolutely perfect, she could do what we wanted her to do and she was a great gymnast and those were the two things I wanted. So we fought tooth and nail for him to be Darth Maul.“
Darth Maul, the trip hop star?
When asked if Benicio del Toro was being considered for the role, a rumor that has been circulating on forums for years, Nick Gillard He didn’t answer, but gave another name, another artist who could play the role…
“I’ll tell you who I wanted to be Trick. He is a singer. There was a band called Massive Attack and he was one of the singers in that band. At some point it would be, and I would love to see a version of it.“

Adrian Nicholas Matthew Toews, better known by his stage name Tricky, is a British producer and rapper who was part of the band Massive Attack. Through his work with this group and other artists, he became a key figure in Bristol’s underground scene, which led to many internationally renowned artists and the music of trip hop, a hybrid genre born from many influences, from hip-hop to jazz. Including blues, electronic music, soul, rock and even dub.
But again, it didn’t work, and it’s emblematic Ray Park who finally won.
The Prelogy as well as the entire Star Wars saga can be seen exclusively on Disney+.
