In summary, Raphael Claus reports bombs dropped at four moments of the decision, two invasions and lasers; Atlético-MG says it will contribute to the investigation
A photographer had to be hospitalized afterwards revolt of fans of Atletico-MG at the MRV Arena, during the final of Brazilian Cup, defeated for the Flemish. During the goal celebration Gonzalo Plata and at the end of the match the athletes threw glasses, firecrackers and even invaded the field. One of the artifacts exploded under the feet of Nuremberg José Mariawho worked photographing the match. In a statement, the Minas Gerais club said it would collaborate in the investigation.
According to the Association of Photographic and Film Reporters of Minas Gerais (Arfoc-MG), Nuremberg suffered a broken three toes, as well as torn tendons and a cut to his foot. The entity reported that he was rescued and taken to the João XXIII hospital, where he underwent surgery. THE Estadao contacted the hospital, but has yet to receive a response regarding the photographer’s condition.
“Arfoc-MG had already reported problems of this type to the administration of the MRV Arena. It was agreed that security measures would be implemented. But, if they were, they would not be enough”, criticizes the organization in a note. “Arfoc-MG offers solidarity to all its associates and other press professionals affected by the violent acts carried out by vandals disguised as Atlético-MG fans and asks the MRV Arena and Atlético-MG for measures to guarantee and preserve the ‘physical integrity of its members, as well as its equipment,’ he concludes.
The Minas Gerais club published a note in which it signed a commitment to ensure that cases like this on Sunday do not happen again. “Regarding the incidents that occurred at the MRV Arena during the Copa Do Brasil final, Atlético will collaborate with the authorities to identify the culprits,” he wrote. The Minas Gerais Football Federation (FMF) expressed solidarity with Nuremberg and wished the photographer recovery.
According to referee Raphael Claus’s report, the bombs were thrown onto the pitch four times: in the 9th, 49th, 50th and 52nd minutes of the game. Claus also reported throwing glasses at minutes 6, 45, 51 and 82 of the game. All were from the home crowd, the judge said.
Claus also recorded two cases of lasers attempting to impair the sight of Rossi, the Flamengo goalkeeper. Furthermore, there was a seven-minute stoppage after Flamengo’s goal, due to objects being thrown at the players. It was at that moment that a fan invaded the pitch.
The referee signals a new invasion attempt. It took place moments before the awards ceremony. Private security guards and military police officers, including using pepper gas, contained the invaders.
The Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) can punish Atlético-MG in the event of a trial. Article 213 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD) provides for a fine of R$100 to R$100,000 for throwing objects on the field.
Again according to the law, when the case is interpreted as a “highly serious” situation or one which jeopardizes the progress of the match, the club can suffer the loss of command on the field from one to ten games.
However, the CBJD article itself predicts disclaimer of the sender if the perpetrators of throwing objects are identified and detained. “Other means of evidence sufficient to demonstrate the absence of liability (of the company) are also admissible”, reads the third paragraph of article 213.
