The actress plays Madam Morrible in the film adaptation of the musical
Michelle YeohOscar winner for Everything Everywhere at the Same Timewas invited by director Jon M. Chu to play Madam Morrible in the film adaptation of the musical Wicked. The 62-year-old actress revealed at an event in Los Angeles, on November 9, that she was not familiar with the musical before the invitation.
At that moment, I really had no idea what he was talking about because I had never watched it Wicked before”, Yeoh said toThe Hollywood Reporter.
She knew the story of The Wizard of Ozbut, due to commitments, I didn’t watch as many musicals as I would have liked.
“So I read it and called Jon back and said, ‘This is a musical and she sings.’ And he said: ‘Ah, calm down, you’re going to have fun, you’re ready for the challenge’”, continued the actress. “And then the next thing I knew, I got a video call and it was him with Ariana and Cynthia saying, ‘It’s imperative that you come and join us now.‘”

Wicked tells the story of Elphaba Thropp, a young college student with green skin and special powers, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba, while Ariana Grande takes on the role of Glinda, the future Good Witch. Yeoh plays Madam Morrible, Elphaba’s mentor and director of Shiz University, where they meet.
When reading the script, Yeoh realized that her character would need to sing, which made her apprehensive. “I was terrified, not just nervous”admitted the actress, who has already mentioned that she does not have training as a singer. “I love singing, but usually in the shower, not with other people around”he joked.
With the support of a vocal coach, Yeoh felt more confident to face the musical challenge.
She made it so much fun, and I achieved scores I never imagined.
Cynthia Erivo was also essential in relieving Yeoh’s tension. “Most of my singing parts are with Cynthia. She would tell me, ‘Just sing, I can hear you. Go all out.'” For Yeoh, the experience was fun: “Not that I’m going to do my own show, but at least I had a lot of fun, and that was great.”
The debut of Wicked is scheduled for November 21st in Brazil.
