Together with businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, Musk will lead the new Department of Government Efficiency, as announced by Donald Trump this Tuesday (11/12).
A week after Donald Trump won a second term in the White House, the contours of his new presidency are beginning to take shape.
The president-elect has already announced nearly a dozen names who will make up his White House team.
This Tuesday (12/11), one of the names announced was that of the richest person in the world: Elon Musk.
Trump announced that the billionaire will work on a new Department of Government Efficiency, with the aim of “dismantling government bureaucracy”, promoting “large-scale structural reforms” and cutting spending.
Musk will lead this department alongside tech entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.
But it is not yet clear what this body will look like or how long it will last.
Musk and Ramaswamy were given a deadline of July 2026 to do this work. However, it is not known whether their positions will also expire on that date.
On the social network X (formerly Twitter), which he owns, Musk celebrated the appointment with phrases such as “Making government fun again!” and “People have no idea how much difference this will make.”
The billionaire also wrote that “all actions of the Department of Government Efficiency will be published online for maximum transparency.”

Musk has been a constant presence at the Trump administration’s transition headquarters at Mar-a-Lago.
According to US press reports, the billionaire advised the Republican on cabinet candidates and last week also took part in a conversation between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Musk’s political action committee has spent about $200 million on Trump’s presidential campaign, and he promises to continue funding efforts to advance the president-elect’s agenda and help Republican candidates in upcoming congressional elections.
The Tesla CEO took to the stage at Republican rallies and, in the final days of the campaign, raffled off $1 million a day to voters in key election states — a scheme that critics say amounts to buying votes and which was challenged in court.
The 53-year-old billionaire was with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, the former president’s residence in Florida, on election night.
This Tuesday, Trump also announced the nomination of Fox News host and war veteran Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense.
In the meantime, it remains to be seen where Robert F. Kennedy Jr., another key figure, will land.
Trump has said he intends to give the former Democrat a role in making the United States “healthy” again. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is an anti-vaccine activist and abandoned his independent candidacy to support the Republican one.
“He wants to do some things and we’re going to let him do it,” Trump said in his election victory speech.
In Congress, Republicans have already won the Senate and are closing in on a majority in the House of Representatives.
