Experts explain how to design a kitchen suitable for residents and which optimizes spaces
Kitchen decoration goes beyond the aesthetic function. With the correct combination of elements it is possible to create an environment that offers convenience for preparing meals and, at the same time, welcomes family and friends. Below, check out 11 tips on how to design this space that is the heart of the home.
1. Use the drawers
Designed carpentry is a great ally for projects, whether large or small. When formatting, architect Gigi Gorenstein suggests investing in a set of drawers and chests of drawers in the space commonly used for lockers. Primarily under sinks and countertops, they offer greater ease, organization and ergonomics in removing items such as pans, lids and pots.
“This design is interesting because it interferes with the ergonomics of people, who don’t need to bend down to access the bottom,” underlines Gigi Gorenstein, manager of the office that bears his name. 3. Pay attention to the lighting
For the architect it is very important to work with two types of lighting in the kitchen. The general light, white in tone with a temperature between 3000K and 4000K, can be considered diffused throughout the entire environment.
It also reinforces the importance of never neglecting specific lighting sources, such as the stove, island, countertop or pantry table. “In these situations, resources such as light tracks fixed to the ceiling, suspensions and integrated LED strips are quite versatile and respond well in different situations,” says the professional.
4. Take advantage of the triangle rule
One of the best kitchen layouts is based on the triangle rule, with points including the refrigerator, sink and stove. Running this the layout facilitates mobility in the spacebecause the guest does not need to travel long distances between areas and can prepare everything more easily.
5. Opt for a uniform island

For those who invest in coverings that enhance the wall of the sink, a good alternative to replacing the pediment are usually baguettes, which aim to make the chosen covering stand out more. Gables tend to be high, 10 to 30 cm, and steal the details of the kitchen.
7. Use resistant coatings
The functional kitchen must be created with resistant finishes, avoiding future renovations. For example, in her projects, Gigi Gorenstein gives priority to finishing carpentry with melamine, to the detriment of lacquer and other types of paint which are coverings it’s easier to take damage after a hit or something. For hobs the preference is to use quartz and its derivatives, avoiding natural stones which stain more easily.
8. Invest in shelves
Shelves are great for adding a touch of style to the kitchen or for those who don’t want to spend a lot on furniture. In them you can organize objects and utensils and insert decorative elements to give the space an extra touch.
“If it is the thin metal model, it gives a lot of elegance to the environment. There are also options with niches, which help with the decoration and functionality that the kitchen should offer residents,” says interior designer Norah Carneiro, of head of the office that bears his name.

The decorative elements help to make the environment more beautiful and, at the same time, functional. “The main elements of the kitchen are lighting fixtureswall lights, service gutters near the tubs and metal accessories near the hood (to insert some decorative element), such as plants or even hanging spoons and pans, in the Italian or country style kitchen”, lists Norah Carneiro.

Defining a specific space for trash and recycling in the kitchen helps keep the environment organized and facilitates sustainable disposal. A good method is to use separate containers for each type of waste: one for organic waste, another for recyclable waste (plastic, paper, glass, metals) and, if possible, a third for non-recyclable waste. This optimizes space and encourages routine recycling, especially in small kitchens.
