Spotify is stepping up its focus on video content, with significant changes starting January 2, 2025, in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. The information comes from The limit.
The company will begin paying creators based on engagement with their videos by paying subscribers and will disable automatic ad breaks for these users to encourage video consumption.
This move puts Spotify in direct competition with YouTube, which already pays creators billions of dollars through ad revenue. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said the platform can deliver a superior experience to creators and audiences.
Since the introduction of video podcasts in 2022, consumption of this format has grown rapidly, with over 300,000 video podcasts now available on the platform and hours of video consumption outpacing the growth of audio hours.
New features for content creation
The move reflects Spotify’s effort to solidify its role as a serious competitor in the video market and distance itself from its origins as a music streaming platform.
