The chairman of the Georgian Election Commission, Giorgi Kalandarishvili, was the target of an unusual attack this Saturday, the 16th, during a meeting in Tbilisi to announce the final results of the parliamentary elections held last month. A glass of paint was thrown in his face by David Kirtadze, a member of the opposition UNM party, linked to former president Mikheil Saakashvili. The news comes from the news agency Reuters.

The incident occurred as party representatives and commission officials met to formalize the numbers for the October 26 vote. Reports indicate that Kirtadze tried to speak at the start of the meeting, but was told to wait and follow protocol. When he insisted, his microphone was turned off and he would be the one to commit the action.
The images broadcast by local television show the moment in which Kirtadze approached Kalandarishvili, who was sitting, and threw paint in his face, interrupting the session.
The Georgian opposition, led by UNM, disputes the election results, denouncing electoral fraud and irregularities during the voting. According to official data, the ruling Georgian Dream party obtained 54% of the votes, maintaining its parliamentary majority.
Critics of Georgian Dream argue that the party, aligned with billionaire founder Bidzina Ivanishvili, seeks to bring the country closer to Russian influence, to the detriment of European integration. Although the government has claimed commitment to joining the European Union, the bloc has frozen Georgia’s membership application, citing concerns about democratic obstacles.
