The decision on the freedom of the Menendez brothers has been postponed


Confessed murderers of their parents, the brothers have gained international notoriety and are now fighting for a review of their convictions

The hearing that could grant the brothers parole Lyle and Erik Menendezconvicted of killing his parents in 1989, was deferred. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) announced that the case review, initially scheduled for November, will take place at an as yet undetermined future date.




The Menendez brothers, currently ages 55 and 53, have been serving life sentences without the possibility of parole since 1996. However, a new California law, which took effect in January of this year, allows juveniles convicted of crimes committed before of the 26 can request a parole hearing after serving between 15 and 25 years of their sentences.

The case of the Menendez brothers has gained international notoriety and has been the subject of numerous documentaries and television series, including the series Monsters – Menendez Brothers: Parent Killers and the documentary The case of the Menendez brothersreleased by Netflix this year. The brothers’ defense claims that they suffered years of abuse from their parents, which motivated the crime.

George Gascón, the prosecutor who would have analyzed the case and supported the revision of the brothers’ sentence, did not seek re-election last November, causing the hearing to be postponed. The futures of Lyle and Erik, who remain in separate prisons in California, are uncertain.
