California Governor Gavin Newsom will propose a new version of the discontinued program to encourage sales of electric cars if the new US government, led by Donald Trump, ends federal credit for the sector, his office said at the expo on Monday .
Trump’s transition team is considering eliminating the $7,500 federal credit for consumers who purchase electric vehicles, Reuters reported earlier this month.
California has surpassed the threshold of 2 million zero-emission vehicles sold, doubling its fleet by 2022.
California’s incentive program, known as CVRP, provided up to $7,500 for the purchase of electrified (hybrid or electric) vehicles and was eliminated about a year ago.
Over the course of its tenure, the CVRP has financed the sale of more than 594,000 new vehicles. California has the highest number of electric vehicle sales in the country.
Last month, a California official said he expects the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to approve the state’s plan to stop the sale of gasoline-only vehicles by 2035, a proposal that has been met with skepticism by major automakers.
California’s rules, adopted by a dozen other U.S. states, require 80% of all new vehicles sold in California to be electric by 2035, and no more than 20% plug-in electric hybrids.
