President classifies move as ‘coup’, guarantees Ramón Díaz for 2025 and says club is once again a good payer
The president of Corinthians, Augusto Melobelieves that the impeachment request which will be voted on by the club’s deliberative council on Thursday 28th is an attempted coup against his mandate. For the president, the current management has professionalized Corinthians and canceled agreements that were not advantageous for the club, which has displeased some groups.
Before the vote in the deliberative council, the steering council (Cori) analyzed the issue. The group, which includes traditional names in Corinthian politics, such as Andrés Sanchez, Duílio Monteiro Alves and Mario Gobbi Filho, recommended the removal of the current president.
“An undue recommendation, because the competent body for this is our ethics committee. It has no basis. This is a coup d’état. They tried to hit us in the elections and they are trying again now. The fans are with us. You have seen the revolution of the players, it was a surprise. We exchanged contracts that were not good for Corinthians. Maybe this bothers some”, replied Augusto Melo in his speech on the programme. SBT Arenathis Monday.
The president also confirmed that the removal request is in retaliation for not giving in to blackmail to fire CEO Fred Luz and football manager Fabinho Soldado. “I don’t want a manager who goes looking for good athletes with money. We went looking for someone who knew football (Fabino). You can read it in the council minutes, the councilors say: ‘You have until the 23rd to send them away, otherwise we’ll go up'”, he reported.
According to Cori, the removal is recommended because the presidency would not have shown the contracts that would have been signed without tenders, would not have appointed an external auditor and would not have presented the budgets to the council. The charges were denied by Melo.
“Management has never been so transparent and with departments open to answering any questions. They have complete freedom to go there and investigate. It’s their obligation. They were elected for this.”
Melo also claims that the club manages its debts professionally and revealed that Corinthians has around R$50 million blocked in court. “We went looking for revenue, to understand. That’s why we asked for help so that everyone would stop tarnishing the image of Corinthians. We can’t pay everything today, but Corinthians is becoming a good payer again,” he said.
«What ruins Corinthians is politics», says Augusto Melo
According to Melo, there will be no replacement for Rubens Gomes, Rubão, who was sporting director at the beginning of his mandate, but broke with his mandate. According to the president, the four months’ salary already guaranteed in advance will be celebrated. “At Corinthians it’s a reason to celebrate, we haven’t done it for a long time.”
The president singled out “dealing with politics” as the main challenge he faced in the role. “It was a difficult start. We created a structure so that Corinthians could be in the situation they are in. My mistake was to trust in many things. They needed to be professionalised, all the departments. We did that. The players they want to play for Corinthians. Today the sponsors want it, what ruins Corinthians is politics”, he said.
Melo once again insisted that the club’s professionalisation “bothers many”. According to him, the political agreement with other opposition figures, which allowed him to win the elections against the group that led Corinthians 16 years ago, was a mistake. “We hang ourselves. It’s hard to name names, it’s just another justification they have. Whatever you say is a reason to take you to the Ethics Committee,” he complained.
“We made a mistake at the beginning, trusting people. It wasn’t me who sent Matheuzinho to train without a contract, it was the management. It wasn’t me who fired Gustavo Henrique”, he cited the controversies of the beginning of his administration.
Augusto Melo, however, recognizes that he also needs help from the opposition. The way he says it, though, keeps the tone belligerent. “The Corinthians is the square meter in which men are most jealous. In two years there are elections, running, winning. We leave a Corinthians much better than the one we received.”
“What I need is the help of Corinthians. They will help me a lot if they keep quiet. Then there will be elections, I will run and return to power,” he said.
The president of Corinthians assigns Ramón Díaz to 2025
Augusto Melo also guaranteed that coach Ramón Díaz will stay at the club until 2025. The coach arrived with the mission of taking Corinthians out of the Brasileirão’s relegation zone. Furthermore, the team reached the semi-finals of the Brazilian Cup and the South American Cup. Even after the eliminations, the Argentine remained.
“Ramón is a great professional. He is working, not only him but Emiliano, the whole committee. He does a great job, he has a contract until the end of 2025 and I hope he keeps it until then,” said Melo.
The president also evaluated the transition of another coach he hired in 2024, António Oliveira. The Portuguese arrived at the club at the beginning of the year, to replace the fired Mano Menzes. “Unfortunately Corinthians was not in the financial position to provide conditions for António (Oliveira) work. But he is a very good professional,” he said.
