Teddy Lucey-Modeste wanted Julien to play a young man with a sincere smile whose adolescence is still visible at a glance: “Francois. There is an actor who never ceases to impress me on the set. He was more than an actor who came to play his role: he was, in fact, so invested and generous that I felt he created the character as much as I did.“
A tense thriller
Teddy Lucy-Modest wanted the film to take the form of a thriller. If the director did not want to stick to the events as they actually happened, he wanted to present on the screen the emotions that he experienced in it: “Danger must have roared around Julien and within Julien. Every step in the school corridor, every glance of a student, every raised finger had to become an object of violence.“
freedom of speech
The director is shown as a character who does not want waves. By choosing this title, Teddy Lucy-Modeste tried to position his film in the teachers’ free speech movement: “We must remember the shock of these images from 2018, where we see a student holding a teacher sitting in front of a computer with a fake gun. #PasDeVagues then resurfaced on social media.“
